A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life. "Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed. The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed. Broader Political Discussions Underway In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests. After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
